Unofficial results show Brian Meyer easily won Tuesday’s special election for state representative.

Meyer defeated Republican Michael Young with an unconfirmed 79-percent of the vote for the House District 33 seat.

Meyer replaces Kevin McCarthy who resigned to take a job in the Iowa attorney general’s office.

Meyer, who currently serves on the Des Moines City Council, says he will resign from that position.
