ISU GRANT: Researching Faster Bridge Construction

The US Department of Transportation has awarded Iowa State University a grant to develop new and faster ways to build bridges.

The $800-thousand grant extends for two years.

Iowa State engineers have been working to improve bridge construction for years.

The DOT has already used a method adapted by Iowa State to replace a 1930 bridge in Cass County. The work would have ordinarily had an impact on traffic for several months.

But instead crews built the new bridge next to the old bridge. Once work was complete, the old bridge was demolished and the new bridge slid into place.

The road was closed and traffic diverted for just nine days.
