MEDIA COVERAGE: Court Rule Changes Proposed

Reporters in Iowa could soon be able to use more than their cameras in the courtroom.

The state is looking at changing its rules for expanded media coverage during trials. The changes would allow reporters to use social media like Twitter and live-blogging websites while in courtrooms.

Justice Zager says, “The proposed rules are intended to address modern news gathering practices in the courtroom while protecting the right of parties to a fair trial, personal privacy, and safety. The proposed rules also keep safeguards in place to preserve the decorum and dignity of our court proceedings, and assuring the fair administration of justice.”

The Iowa Supreme Court will be accepting and reviewing comments from people and interested groups about the issue through January 6th. You can e-mail a comment to: rules.comments@iowacourts.gov

Safeguards are in place to preserve the decorum and dignity of our court proceedings, and assuring the fair administration of justice? Really? Let we the people be the judge of that.
