MURPHY’S LAW: Mohr Love, Hammer Drops, Vikings Beard

Biff Hammer said on our radio show that Iowa will only win one more game. At Purdue. My immediate reflex was to think Biff wrong. Iowa has four winnable games. Iowa also has three losable games. After Purdue, which game is Iowa most likely to win? Saturday vs Wisconsin? No. Hosting Michigan? Probably. At Nebraska? Too early to know the Huskers state of mind in that one.  Iowa is much improved from last year, and headed to a bowl. That’s a step. As is not knowing outcomes. …

Comedian, actor, and radio host Jay Mohr sure loves Iowa State’s Paul Rhoads.

Rhoads passionate speech that Mohr loved seems so long ago.  ISU had just outplayed Texas, and what should’ve been a win, goes down as a loss. Since then, it’s been mostly no-doubters. The past two weeks has exposed Iowa State’s relative lack of talent, experience, and depth. The record isn’t a shock, but ISU losing at home to UNI, and to Baylor by 64 in the same season, is.

It’s Rhoads first head coaching job, and you can see the lessons being learned. He remains the right man for the job, but at ISU there is little margin for error. You have to have the right assistants, creative approach, and some good luck. History shows ISU to be the most difficult job in major conference football. Most Cyclone fans know this. It’s why they’re so patient. However, no one expected three–going on four–straight losing seasons. …

Penn State will pay 26 victims of Jerry Sandusky nearly $60 million. Money won’t buy back what Sandusky took, but if it brings measure of comfort, good. …

Is there a better marching band than Ohio State? This video says no.

The last time the Red Sox clinched a World Series at Fenway Park, Babe Ruth pitched for the Sox. Won two games too. Red Sox should celebrate at home again by Friday. Should. Michael Wacha–did we mention he was born in Iowa?–pitches game 6 for the Cardinals, and Wacha may force game 7. Wacha’s been that good.

Do you think David Ortiz is hitting in his sleep? …

Major League Baseball must implement some new rules to speed the game up. Four hours is WAY too long for a 9-inning game. Longer commercial breaks play a part, but it’s more to do with pitchers taking 30 to 40 seconds between each pitch, and batters constantly adjusting equipment, and stepping out of the box. Then relief pitchers take forever to reach the mound, and even longer to warm-up (again). Baseball gets new commish soon. Let’s hope he (or she) does something before we lose the interest of even more kids. …

Don’t understand why everyone talks like the Heat can’t be stopped. The Spurs choked away game 6, or they’d be NBA champions right now.

Having said that, put me down for a threepeat. …

Royce White set out to be a trailblazer for athletes with mental health issues. Sadly, White’s had the opposite effect. He’s been such a bust, and, at times, such a headache, that it’s unlikely any pro team would spend a high draft pick on someone with similar concerns. White has done some positives, but not sure he realizes the negatives. It’s possible athletes with anxiety will now try to keep teams from knowing. …

In 1975, the Vikings lost to the Steelers in the Super Bowl.  Vikings fan Emmett Pearson vowed he wouldn’t shave until the Vikes won the big game. Pearson died last week at age 83. He had a long beard. …

In our iTunes world, many of us don’t buy albums the way we used to. This week, I doubled up. Arcade Fire’s “Reflektor”, and Pearl Jam’s “Lightning Bolt”. Tuesday, I’ll add a third: Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP 2″. That’s not a misprint. The guy can write. And rap. …

Can’t wait to see Bad Grandpa. Anyone seen it yet? The previews make me laugh out loud. Not proud of that. …
