It was a special birthday party Thursday for a Des Moines boy turning 13.

Hiatt Middle School held the celebration for Justin Chey. In 13 short years he has dealt with several struggles; the most recent-brain cancer.

Justin collapsed during class at school earlier this month. He has since undergone surgery for a brain tumor and will begin chemotherapy soon.

Justin has known hardship much of his life.

His is being raised by a single mother and while she's at work Justin takes care of his grandparents. One of which has Alzheimer’s.

During the party, Justin got several gifts including clothes from the East High baseball and football team and an iPad.

Hiatt students say Justin deserves it all.

“I think Justin deserved this big ole party and he deserves more and I hope we can get him back up on his feet and he can get better,” Blake Beasley said.

An Iowan who found out about Justin’s story also attended the party and gave him a check for $5,000 to help out his family.
