A Des Moines mom is in the Polk County Jail after police say she left her two-year-old and four-year-old home alone Wednesday night.

Police were called to an apartment complex at 216 Dickman Road a little after midnight. Someone living in the building noticed the two young children outside in the rain, one of them with just a shirt and no pants or underwear, the other was dressed, but had a soaked diaper on.

“A resident down there had heard some crying and they had gone outside and looked outside and saw two kids wandering around in the parking lot of the parking complex there,” Sgt. Halifax said.

The kids were able to tell police which apartment they lived in. When officers made entry, they say the apartment was full of animal feces, and an open bottle of narcotics was within reach of the kids.

When the mother, 22-year-old Leah Stockbauer, got home around 1:00 a.m., she told police she had left her kids with a friend. But police say the four-year-old spoke up and said “No mom, you just left us.”

This is Stockbauer’s second arrest for child endangerment in less than a year.

Her kids are now with their grandmother.
