An Ankeny father has been sentenced to the maximum penalty for fatally shooting his daughter.

Thursday, a judge sentenced Scott Hazelbaker on one count of involuntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

Hazelbaker pleaded guilty to the charge last month. He says he thought the safety was on when he point a gun at his 18-year-old daughter Emily on June 15th and fired.

Hazelbaker says he loved his daughter and never meant to hurt her.

This man has been in “prison” ever since this tragedy occurred. Whether it was stupid for him to do, doesn’t matter. He has already incurred enough wrath on himself that prison will be what he feels he rightly deserves and maybe so. I don’t know. I am definitely saying prayers for him and his family. I would not want to trade places with him for anything.

I think the sentence was fair. Unfortunately, his sentence is life, because he killed his daughter and can never take that back. I just don’t know of any intelligent person that would EVER aim a gun at another human, safety on or not. Firearms 101….never point a gun at another person. End of story.

Five years for killing a family member really? Habitual Meth Offenders Get 75 to life sex offenders get ten and someone that kills someone gets 5 wth its rotten the justice system is corrupt whos to say when he gets out in five years he wont do this to someone else destroy someone elses family. He should be locked away forever along with the meth offenders and sex offenders
