Prosecutors filed charges against a man wanted for killing a former Iowa high school football player and coach.

Derek Moore was a coach at Missouri Southern State University, after playing high school football in Newton and coaching in Ames.  He had been a coach for 14 years around the Midwest but those who knew him best said his love for football started back in his hometown of Newton.

Police said Jeffrey Bruner shot Moore outside of a Missouri movie theater parking lot in Joplin, Mo. on Friday night.

Family and friends said they are still trying to make sense of what happened to Moore.  This was Moore’s first year as an offensive line coach for Missouri Southern.

Missouri Southern will hold a memorial service for Moore on Monday.  Moore leaves behind his seven-year-old son, Elijah.

I had the pleasure of being coached by Derek Moore as a senior defensive tackle at Ames High. In addition to the fundamentals, he taught us to play the game with passion. I am deeply saddened to hear of his tragic death. My hearts and prayers go out to his close friends and family.
