A familiar sound of the holidays will begin this week in the Des Moines metro. The Salvation Army starts up bell ringing Friday to kick off its Red Kettle campaign.

There are 60 red kettle locations this year, with three new locations. Kettles will now be at the HyVee stores in Waukee and Ankeny and the Mills Fleet Farm in Ankeny.

The Red Kettle goal for the 2013 is $1.2 million. That’s a nine-percent increase over what was collected in last year’s campaign. Officials say about 40-percent of the money collected during campaigns is donated through the red kettles. The other money comes in by mail or is donated using the internet and phone campaigns.

If you’d like to volunteer as a bell ringer you can call 243-RING or sign up online.
