A semi-trailer containing 760 turkeys overturned Sunday night in Sac County, killing hundreds of the animals.

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office says it happened on Highway 20, where it intersects with Perkins Avenue. The truck that was hauling the trailer of turkeys had a malfunction and was pulled over on the shoulder of the road. The trailer was detached from the truck and resting on a dolly. High winds blew over the trailer.

About 70% of the turkeys died from injuries received in the accident.

The turkeys were being transported to Sara Lee in Storm Lake.
