A home in Windsor Heights is still standing thanks to a witness who was just passing by and noticed the smoke coming from the home.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 1100 block of 68th Street at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, thick smoke was coming from the attic and the kitchen.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire before it spread to the rest of the home. No one was inside at the time of the fire.

A public works employee, just passing by, reported seeing the smoke.

“All of the city services are on the south side of University so we travel these neighborhoods a lot. It was awesome they had the where with all to notice something was going on,” says Windsor Heights Fire Chief Christopher Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
