Thanksgiving is still weeks away and Veterans Day is just around the corner, but the Red Cross hopes you get in the holiday spirit on Friday.

The American Red Cross is holding its Holiday Mail for Heroes card signing event.  The holiday mail event gives people a chance to say thank you and happy holidays to those serving in the Armed Forces.

The Holiday Mail for Heroes event will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Des Moines office of the Red Cross, at 2116 Grand Ave.  Visitors can also learn more about the Armed Forces’ work with the Red Cross at the Des Moines office at 11:15 a.m. and again at 12:15 p.m.

The card signing event in Des Moines on Friday is part of a nationwide program through the Red Cross.  Nearly two-million cards were distributed to the troops and their families last year as part of the program.

If you cannot make the card signing event in Des Moines on Friday but still want to mail a card, you have until Dec. 6 to send it.  The Red Cross asks that all cards to be sent out be postmarked to them by Dec. 6 to ensure the troops and veterans receive the cards for the holidays.
