MURPHY’S LAW: Bad Boilers, Bad Seasons, Bad Grandpa

It makes a few Hawkeye fans nervous when people like me say, “There’s no way Iowa should lose to Purdue”. There’s not. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen–there’s always a chance if everything goes right for one team, and wrong for another, but the Boilers are that bad. One of the worst teams in Big Ten history. The oft-stated mind-blowing stat of the season: Purdue hasn’t been inside the red zone (an opponent’s 20 yard line) since September. Iowa’s defense should keep that going. Hawks win comfortably. …

The Cyclones need a win in the worst way, and for many reasons. It could happen Saturday. The Register’s Tommy Birch says it will happen and you can take it to the bank. I’m leaving my money alone. An ISU win would improve the moods of many, including my wife (she’s an alumna), but give me TCU. Both teams are battered and beaten, but TCU has established quarterback Casey Pachall, and ISU has — we’re still not sure. Grant Rohach will likely start, but Sam Richardson has played better. And worse. …

Brian Ferentz tweets his mind, which is refreshing. Ferentz tweeted that the Kinnick Stadium experience is lacking, though Ferentz praised the fans. He means music and such. Many Iowa fans agree with Ferentz. And many responded, “Want to improve the game day atmosphere? Win more home games.” …

Whose idea was it to hand out red and white pom-poms for the Wisconsin game? It was to honor Veterans Day, but since that day was nine days away, few people put it together. On TV, it often looked like a Badger home game. Good intention, bad execution. …

When outsiders ask why Paul Rhoads isn’t catching more criticism from Cyclone fans, here’s why. Since 1991, Iowa State has won zero or one conference game in a season ten times. And it could be 11 soon. Think about that. No conference wins, or one conference win, nearly half the time. It adds perspective to why ISU fans appreciate the Rhoads-coached wins over Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Iowa, and others. (Thank you Biff Hammer and Kirk Haaland for the stat, depressing as it is.)

With that in mind, from the Murph & Andy Show, it’s “Biff’s Top 5 Worst ISU seasons and Worst losses”.

 1. 1985. Lost to Drake 20-17, at home Oct. 5 (Criner).

 2. 1994. Lost to UNI, W. Mich, and Rice in September on the way to an 0-10-1 (0-6-1) season (Walden)

 3. 1997. Lost to Wyoming 56-10. Only win over season was in late Oct. vs. Baylor, and ISU fans tore down the goalposts. Came with a TD of giving up 500 points in 11 games. (McCarney)

 4. 2007: Lost to Kent State, UNI, and Toledo. Finished 3-9. (Chizek)

 5. Lost to Kansas 50-47 as part of a 4-7 1992 season. ISU made history by scoring 40 unanswered points in the game – and lost. (Down 21-7…up 47-21…lost 50-47) (Walden)

See, it could be worse. …

Seneca Wallace provided Cyclone fans with several thrills they’ll never forget. The run against Texas Tech comes to mind. The final dive into the end zone against Florida State in Arrowhead Stadium. And the second half comeback at Iowa, the Hawks lone loss of the regular season.

Seneca struggled in his first game for the Packers. He’ll no doubt look better after a week of reps with the #1 team. Still, this video comparing Seneca’s throwing motion to Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite is funny.

What do you know, it’s Valley vs Dowling again. You just knew Gary Swenson would find a way to slow down that Ames offense. Clifford Kwaw-Mensah became class 4-A’s all time single season rushing leader, but Valley’s Tyus Mason put on a show with 470 yards rushing and 5 TDs. That’s a decent season. More than a quarter mile rushing. …

Dallas Center-Grimes lost Monday night. Sophomore Austin Kloewer had to leave the game with a concussion. This photo of his helmet shows why:

helmetAustin tells me he’s still experiencing headaches, but otherwise doing fine. He says doctors told him to rest and take it easy. Austin says he’ll be back with the Mustangs next season. …

Love that Bill Self briefly benched Andrew Wiggins. The hype is going to make it tough for Wiggins to keep his feet on the ground, and Self realizes that. …

Good quote from former Buckeye Mark Titus: “Iowa generating so much buzz for being underrated that it might be overrated at this point”. Hawks won’t sneak up on anyone, that’s for sure. Iowa looked great Friday night against over-matched UNC-Wilmington. …

K-State gave away free bacon at a women’s basketball game. Is this ridiculous, brilliant, or both? …

$2 beer at all Saturday Energy games. Attendance just went up. …

Capital 106.3 you’re killing me with this Christmas music. Then again, I did catch my favorite on the way home Wednesday night:

“Bad Grandpa” is profane, twisted, and funny. It’s even a tad sweet. Tad.  Recommended only for those who like R-rated Candid Camera stunts.

I was at that KU/ISU game in 1992. Excruciating. And the 1994 season was the most painful of all to me. After losing the first game, the team quit for the rest of the season. As far as this season goes, I think we knew it would be a tough year and the injuries have only magnified it.
