A new tribute to military members and veterans is up on display in western Iowa.

Artist Ray Sorenson is known for transforming rocks into a patriotic piece of art.

This weekend Sorenson unveiled a mural of five soldiers from Dickinson County in Lake Park.  The patriotic rock mural is surrounded by five more rocks, each representing one of the five branches of the armed forces.

Sorenson described his paintings as a large-scale thank you card to veterans, one he said he’s grateful to be involved with.

“It means a lot. I love to thank veterans anyways.  That’s what most of my artwork is based on,” Sorenson said.

“But to be able to come and enjoy it with actual veterans and to dedicate something like this means the world to me,” he said.

People can apply for a freedom rock in their county right from Sorenson’s website.
