GOODWILL ENTERPRISE: Now Making Cookies

Goodwill hopes to copy the Girl Scouts by getting into the cookie business.  The company is using its new idea as a way to help put veterans back to work.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday there were cheers and smiles all around.  The idea is starting small but the company has big plans.

The staff of just four will bake and sell super-sized monster cookies.  The Goodwill stores across eastern Iowa will then sell them for around $1.50.

Each day the staff makes enough dough to make 800 cookies.  But this is more than just making cookies for the new employees, as veterans they are baking up a fresh start in life one cookie at a time.

The staff said they hope to sell the cookies in supermarkets soon and one day, possibly making cookies from coast to coast.

Goodwill officials said they hope to rotate veterans through the bakery program every six months as they try other jobs in the area.
