The Des Moines Airport Authority Board has voted to begin charging commercial vehicle fees for businesses that drop off and pick up travelers at the airport.

The board met Tuesday morning and approved the new fees.

Management at the airport says the fees are needed to offset the costs of security and maintenance of the front drive access lanes.

Businesses that would be charged the fee voiced their opposition, saying they’ll likely have to pass on the cost of the fee to their customers.

The costs per trip are:

Taxis - $.50

Off Airport Parking Operators and Hotel Shuttles - $1

Limousine - $2

Charter Bus - $10

The fees are set to begin April 1st, 2014.
