Two Iowans who paved the way for students’ rights will soon be back in Des Moines.

Mary Beth Tinker and her brother John Tinker will visit next Monday and Tuesday as part of the Tinker Tour.

Almost 50 years ago the pair wore black armbands to school to mourn the dead of the Vietnam War. They were suspended, but challenged the move.

The case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, where the Tinkers won due to constitutional rights of freedom of speech and expression.

The Tinkers will address their former schools, North High and Harding Middle School, next week and also get a chance to talk with student journalists.

The tour is a special project of the Student Press Law Center and is making 50 stops in 18 of the states in the eastern part of the U.S.
