Iowa farmers are making progress in the fields even after the first snowfall.

The USDA reports 98-percent of the soybean harvest is complete in Iowa. Eighty-eight-percent of the corn harvest is done. Both of those are ahead of average.

“Farmers are trying to wrap up harvest and complete additional fall field work, including tillage, fertilizer applications and conservation practice construction,” says Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey. “That 12 percent of the corn crop still in the field represents an estimated $1 billion worth of grain yet to be harvested in Iowa.”

Recent precipitation is a concern for farmers who still have corn in the fields because corn can rot easily if not dried before storage.
