A Marshall County school is asking parents to reminder their kids about stranger danger after a known sex offender was spotted parked outside their school earlier this week.
Stewart Smith was the subject of several Channel 13 reports last month. The Marshalltown man is on the national sex offender registry and two state registries for sex crimes committed against children.
Smith admitted on camera to being a pedophile. However he is not on the Iowa registry.
Because he’s not an Iowa offender, he’s allowed to live across the street from a school. This week he was spotted sitting in a car outside an East Marshall Middle School.
Smith wasn’t breaking the law by being there but school officials still want parents and kids to be aware.
An email was sent out to parents this week about the incident saying, in part, “All East Marshall school buildings have been alerted to be on the lookout. The sheriff’s office has also been contacted. Please talk to your students about safety when they leave school grounds or playing in unsupervised areas.”
