A morning power outage in the metro was caused by a squirrel.

After a squirrel found its way into a substation, the lights went out in the metro for thousands, officials said.

Around 8,400 customers in Urbandale and Des Moines lost power around 7:30 a.m., according to MidAmerican Energy.

Crews began restoring power around 8 a.m. and all customers had their power back on by 9 a.m.
