The Iowa Homeless Youth Center is hosting Reggie’s Sleep Out and raising money for the estimated 1,500 homeless youth in central Iowa.

The event was named after Reggie Kelsey. Kelsey aged out of the foster care system and was found dead in the Des Moines River.

The money that volunteers raise will go toward the Iowa Homeless Youth Center. The center is dedicated to helping youth like Kelsey transition to a life as a successful and productive member of their community.

They then spend the night at Drake Stadium under cardboard boxes to raise awareness on the struggles of the homeless community.

Team Blockhead created 28 foot tall Lego man. The Lego man includes four stories of bunk beds which the participants plan on sleeping in tonight. The team had a goal of raising $6,000. So far, they’ve raised nearly $7,000.

Last year Reggie’s Sleep Out raised nearly $170,000.
