A big donation is helping ensure that local families can cook up a family feast this Thanksgiving.

Hy-Vee is working to deliver 10,000 turkeys to 10 cities in 10 days.

That means 1,000 turkeys will go to the selected cities and that includes Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and the Quad Cities.

Tuesday morning the Des Moines turkeys arrived at the Food Bank of Iowa. Food bank officials say this time of the year can be stressful as expenses rise for the winter months and the holidays.

“This year we were fortunate, we were able to purchase 7,000 turkeys but we’ve had requests for 10,000 and so to have these additional turkeys delivered from Hy-Vee today is really filling a great gap for us,” says Carey Miller, Executive Director at the Food Bank of Iowa.

Hy-Vee say this program is about a $14,000 investment.
