A former Pella pastor convicted of having sexual relations with members of his congregation will get a new trial.
In August of 2012, Patrick Edouard was convicted of four counts of sexual exploitation by a therapist or counselor and one count of pattern, practice, or scheme to engage in sexual exploitation.
Edouard admitted to having affairs with four women in his congregation. However, he says he wasn’t counseling them at the time.
Edouard claims the district count made a mistake and didn’t tell the jury the appropriate definition of a counselor during jury instructions before deliberation.
Wednesday, the Iowa Court of Appeals reversed the convictions and ordering a new trial for Edouard.
