The Des Moines Area Region Transit Authority’s new Central Station is being praised for being green.

The station at 620 Cherry Street is now certified LEED Platinum, that’s the highest certification of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The new station was built with 24-percent of recycled construction materials, it has 70 geothermal wells that help with heating and cooling, and it captures and cleans rainwater for tasks like washing bus platforms.

Since it opened in November 2012, it’s used more than one million gallons of rainwater.
