PEACEKEEPING MISSION: Sendoff For Troops In Boone

A crowd rallied in Boone Friday evening to sendoff a group of local soldiers.

Forty soldiers with the 248th Aviation Support Battalion leave Saturday for a one year mission in Kosovo supporting a peacekeeping mission by maintain aircraft.

For some, this is a first deployment but others have become accustomed to it.

The Jacobsmeier’s have spent holidays apart before and know what to expect this time around.

“We already celebrated Thanksgiving last week. We’ll do Christmas through Skype,” Theresa Jacobsmeier says.

On Saturday afternoon a mission overseas ends for 100 returning soldiers.

The men and women of the 833rd Engineering Company return to Ottumwa after a year serving in Afghanistan.

This is the final Iowa National Guard unit to serve in a combat role in Afghanistan.
