NEW DEAL: Agreement On Iran’s Nuclear Program

Posted on: 9:29 pm, November 24, 2013, by

There is already disagreement on the new deal with Iran.

Iran and six other world powers came to a six-month interim agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.  President Obama announced the deal at a press conference on Saturday night.

President Obama said the six-month accord is an important step toward a comprehensive solution on Iran’s nuclear program.  But Israeli officials said they think the deal is a mistake.

“We want to see a genuine deal, a good deal, a deal that has the ability to sustain itself and actually does dismantle the Iranian military nuclear program,” said Israeli Prime Minister Spokesperson Mark Regev.

We’re concerned that this deal that came out of Geneva is a bad deal and does not actually attain that goal,” Regev said.

The deal eases some sanctions on Iran but rolls back Tehran’s enriched Uranium stockpile, according to Secretary of State John Kerry.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani claimed the deal gives Iran an explicit right to enrich Uranium, something the United States has rejected.

Kerry insisted the interim agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program will make Israel safer.

“I believe that Israel in fact will be safer, providing we make sure that these sanctions don’t get lifted in a way that reduces the pressure on Iran and we don’t believe they will be,” Kerry said

“There’s very little sanctions relief here.  The basic architecture of the sanctions stays in place,” Kerry said.

Strong verification tactics will be needed to hold Iran accountable to the deal, according to Kerry.
