Des Moines firefighters say an abandon house fire was started by someone trying to stay warm.

Officials responded to a call just before 2:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of 27th Street in Des Moines Monday.

When they arrived the fire was on two floors. They quickly put it out but officials say the house is a total loss.

Officials say there is no furniture in the house and no homeowners. They believe someone was occupying the house trying to stay warm.

There are no suspects in the case but authorities say since the weather is getting colder you should always be aware of abandoned houses.

“If you have an abandon structure or home in your neighborhood, look for fresh prints, doors or windows that look loose, and please call and notify law enforcement to get that checked out,” Brian O’Keefe with the Des Moines fire department said.

Officials say the cause is still under investigation and are still determining if it was an accident or intentional.
