AGRIBUSINESS: Farm Bill Leaders Meet Wednesday
Congressional aides have confirmed House and Senate Ag Committee leadership will meet privately Wednesday, even though the Senate is not in session until next week.
House Speaker John Boehner lays the blame for farm bill delays squarely at the feet of Senate Democrats, who he says have rebuffed House Ag Chair Frank Lucas’s good faith efforts to get a measure passed.
Senate Democrats, specifically John Rockefeller of Virginia and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, have pledged to step up efforts to restore food assistance cuts. According to Rockefeller, one reason to do so is that each dollar in SNAP benefits generates a dollar and 79 cents in economic activity.
In the event there’s no farm bill before year’s end, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says USDA will be ready to implement the permanent farm laws quickly.
