A Des Moines park that’s been empty for years is looking ahead to new possibilities.

The Riverview Park used to be home to an amusement park 35 years ago. The space has not been used since.

“The parks belong to the people of Des Moines and we want them to make it their park,” says Jen Fletcher with Des Moines Parks and Recreation.

A public meeting is being held to see what residents want to do with the space. One of the ideas on the table is turning the space into a nature reserve.

Those who used to attend the amusement park when they were children say they are anticipating showing off the new park to their children.

“Nieces and nephews come out here or their kids, ‘ya that`d be fun for them to come out here and have some kind of fun outing out here,” says Joe McChurch of Altoona.

The public meeting is Wednesday night at 6:30 at the Northside Senior Center in the Park Fair Mall.
