Governor Branstad and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey sent a letter to Senator Tom Harkin this week, asking Harkin to support the King amendment as part of the Farm Bill negotiations.
Iowa Congressman Steve King sponsored the amendment to stop states from dictating agriculture production practices. The amendment was driven in part by California’s Proposition Two which was signed into law in 2010.
California’s law would effectively double the cost of hen houses. Iowa is number one in the country in egg production. Out of the 40-million cases of eggs produced in Iowa last year, a little over nine percent were exported to California.
