Students will soon have the chance to peruse the past, while preparing for the future.

The Drake University Archives were officially dedicated Friday in Des Moines. Among the many records housed in the archives are the papers of former governor Robert D. Ray and Senator Tom Harkin.

The archives will allow students and researchers to not only scan their papers but thousands of historical photographs and political cartoons.

Sen. Harkin spoke at the ceremony, "I hope in future...and also acquisitions will be a resource for scholars and students. To bring a deeper knowledge of national issues and federal processes as well as to further in a non-partisan way the causes and policies to which I have dedicated my career of public service."

Sen. Harkin was originally going to give his papers to Iowa State University, but changed his mind and gave the papers to Drake University instead.
