HUSER TRIAL: State Rests, Defense Begins

The second murder trial of Vernon Huser entered a fourth week in Polk County Monday.

After nine days of testimony, the state rested its case Monday morning. The 66-year-old is charged with first degree murder in the death of Lance Morningstar.

Lance Morningstar had an affair with Huser’s ex-wife and went missing in the fall of 2004. Another man, Louis Woolheater, was convicted of carrying out the crime prosecutors say Huser helped plot.

Nearly ten years later, memories have faded.  A former employee of Huser’s testified that she doesn’t remember any fights between the defendant his ex-wife, Deb.

“Do you ever recall Mr. Huser calling Deb a name and then she would leave?” asked Assistant Polk County Attorney Steve Foritano.

“Not that I recall,” testified Madonna Green.

“And you don’t recall telling law enforcement that?” asked Foritano.

“No,” says Green.

Huser is expected to take the stand in his own defense.
