911 CALLS: Southside Des Moines Shooting Spree

We are getting a new glimpse at just how scary a shooting on Des Moines’ south side was last week.

Tuesday police released some of the 911 calls from witnesses.

The gunman, Steven Vogel, opened fire on December 4th just before 3:30 outside his home at 1018 Creston Avenue.

Neighbors called 911 saying Vogel was shooting at cars, homes and responding police officers.  The whole incident lasted about 20 minutes.

One neighbor said Vogel had police at his home often. Others said they’ve had problems with him in the past. When Vogel fired at officers, two officers fired back, with one bullet hitting Vogel in the head. He died at the hospital.

Police are still searching for a motive in the shooting.
