MURPHY’S LAW: Texas Two Step, Heisman Headache, Prior Retires

There are several media reports that Mack Brown will resign at Texas by the end of the week. Brown says he’s recruiting, and the reports aren’t true. This likely means Brown doesn’t know he’s stepping down yet, but he soon will. Texas won’t call it “fired”, but that’s what it would be.

Brown has won 9 or more games in 10-straight seasons at Texas, but the past four, no one has done less with more. Texas has it all. Money, facilities, brand, recruiting hotbed, you name it, Texas has it. Coaches will climb over themselves to try and wake this sleeping giant. That is unless Nick Saban takes the job. Saban has said he won’t, which means nothing. He said the same thing about the Alabama job.

Saban is smart. He knows Bama fans now expect national title or bust. He could go to Texas, win more each year, eventually add another national championship, and retire in a house constucted completely out of one thousand dollar bills. The guess here is Saban stays at Alabama, but parlays the Texas interest into another ginormous raise and contract extension. …

Everything is relative. Alabama would yawn at, or decline, an invitation from the Liberty Bowl. At Rice, the reaction is priceless. Go right to :37 if you want the good stuff:

Awesome. …

Voting for the Heisman trophy this year did not feel like the priviledge it usually does. I voted for FSU’s Jameis Winston. I hope our legal system made the right call, though I realize a trophy is a trivial part of that desire. …

Give me Jay Cutler over Josh McCown. McCown has exceeded all expectations, but I haven’t forgotten Ryan Fitzpatrick or Matt Flynn. …

Interest in the Outback Bowl runs really high for Hawkeye fans, but the typical large crowd may not follow. It’s just too expensive for many people. My plane ticket alone cost $890, and I bought it before the official announcement. …

Mark Prior retired from baseball. He’s only 33. Prior’s unfulfilled promise is sad, not because he blew it–he didn’t–but because he just couldn’t stay healthy. What a joy it was to watch him pitch at Principal Park and Wrigley Field before the arm started falling apart. …

I just read that football (American football, not soccer) could be included in the Olympics by 2024. Is the IOC trying to make more people hate the USA? No other countries want football in the Olympics. …

Had a nice five day vacation to Mexico last week. Big thanks to my mom for flying into this frozen tundra and watching our kids. We had a great time, and I thought I’d share a few of my favorite photos. (Took them all with my phone. Didn’t even take a camera. Isn’t that the way it is now?)
