Des Moines set attendance records for the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. But it wasn’t enough for the NCAA to send players back to the capital.

The city’s bid to become a regional host site in 2015 was rejected.

However, Des Moines will host the women’s volleyball regional championships in 2015.

The event will be hosted by the Des Moines Area Sports Commission, Global Spectrum, and the University of Northern Iowa.

The head of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau says it’s been hard to watch other cities, instead of Des Moines get to host a wide array of NCAA events.

“Yeah, it`s a big bummer,” Greg Edwards said. “You know, we`ve worked hard, we`ve made trips to Indianapolis, we`ve met with the NCAA staff.  We formed good relationships there.”

Edwards says there’s hope Des Moines may still be selected to host one of the rounds of a future men’s basketball tournament.
