Des Moines police now have a new set of rules to follow when embarking on a chase.

The rules say only marked police vehicles are allowed to engage in a pursuit. They also say a roadblock must be authorized by a supervisor and a broadcast must be made of its location.

In addition, the rules now specify situations when officers should end a pursuit. That includes ending a chase if a suspect drives the wrong way down a road, and if police find out the suspect’s identity and determine the suspect can be taken into custody at a later time.
