The Iowa State Patrol has released the name of a man killed Thursday in a Jasper County accident involving a school bus.

Fifty-two-year-old Eric Ewurs of rural Newton died when his car hit the back of a stopped school bus and caught fire. The accident happened just after 4:00 p.m. on F-48 near Newgate Street, east of Colfax.

The school bus was at a bus stop when Ewurs’ vehicle struck it from behind. Another vehicle hit the back of Ewurs’ car.

The bus had just dropped off its last passenger. The school bus driver and the two occupants of the vehicle that struck Ewurs’ car were treated and released at the scene.

Ewurs was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into what caused the crash continues but officials say decreased visibility because of the setting sun may have played a part.
