Men and women who have lost their lives serving our country were on the minds of people at an event today in van meter.

Wreaths Across America started at Arlington National Cemetery 20 years ago.

At the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, people laid about 1,400 wreaths on the grave sites of fallen soldiers.  Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and the 4th of July celebrate our veterans and freedom during the other three seasons.

Organizers said this event helps people remember our heroes all year-round.

"I think every day is appropriate to remember the veterans. People who came today feel we should decorate these graves,” said Col. Robert King, Director of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs.

Similar events were held in 800 cities across the country.
