Gun control advocates in 70 cities gathered Saturday to honor the victims of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn.
The group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America hosted an event Saturday in Des Moines.
Community leaders spoke about efforts being taken to keep our schools and children safe.
Instead of a moment of silence for Newtown victims, people rang bells. It symbolized the group's belief that people must speak up in order for stricter gun laws to be passed.
"We're not going to be silent anymore. We're going to keep working on this issue at the local level, state level, and continue working on the national level,” said Cheryl Thomas of Moms Demand Action.
Moms Demand Action says 83 people die from gun violence each day in America.
