USDA scientists are moving to fight deadly swine viruses of other countries.  The scientists are trying to develop vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other strategies to control classical swine fever.

One genetically manipulated marker virus was produced and introduced. It shows signs of early immunity against classical swine fever within the first week after vaccination.  Scientists have also developed a detection tool to find classic swine fever virus in infected animals before signs of the disease appears.
Classical swine fever is eradicated in the United States, but is present in wild boars in Europe and can sometimes infect domestic pigs.
