It was a well-deserved honor Thursday evening for Channel 13 anchor Dan winters.

Last month he brought us the story of Lance Corporal Brandon Carroll. The veteran’s car broke down and he had to hitch a ride to and from work every day.

Word got out, and more than a dozen local businesses joined forces to restore a 1977 ford F150 for Carroll.

It all happened thanks to Operation First Response. The charity helps wounded heroes and disabled veterans with financial needs.

“You’ve been so good at surprising our heroes, we have a surprise for you.”

PJ Sesker-Green from Operation First Response showed up at our studios to present Dan with the Civilian Hero of the Year award.

Thirty-six people were nominated but Dan’s work bringing stories about helping Iowa veterans made him the number one pick.
