A robber who broke into a Des Moines Walgreens early Thursday morning was caught by a Drake University security officer.

A little before 2:30 a.m. Officer Matt Richardson heard an alarm going off at the store located at 30th and University.

Police say Richardson saw a man jump through the store’s front door and take off running. Richardson drove through the parking lot and saw the man go through a gap in the fence, so the officer got out of his vehicle and chased him.

Richardson caught the suspect, 47-year-old Eric Burgess, and held him until police got there and arrested him.

Burgess is in the Polk County Jail on third degree burglary and probation violation charges.
