Blood centers say they need donations more than ever this time of year.

LifeServe Blood Center teamed up with Life 107.1 to hold the pay it forward blood drive.

Organizers say busy holiday schedules, winter weather and cold and flu season have major impacts on local blood supplies.

“This time of year is really important for us for blood donations,” says LifeServe’s Beth Philips.

“Because of the holidays we are closed for two days and that doesn’t mean patients aren’t in need during those two days. So it’s really important we ramp up our collection efforts around the holiday season and that’s why we’re here today.”

Donations are being taken until 6 p.m. at the Valley Community Center in West Des Moines.

I can’t emphasize enough how important donating blood is. There are more accidents around the holidays, and like you said, the blood banks are closed. In general, fewer people donate, which makes blood drives like yours extra important. Thank you for saving lives!
