PRIVATE FUNDING: Des Moines Council Considers Bridge Repair Project
The Des Moines City Council is expected to vote tonight on a fundraising plan for saving the Southwest 5th Street Bridge.
Built in 1898, the commonly known “Jackson Street Bridge” was closed in March after an engineering report deemed it to be unsafe. An estimate showed it could cost up to 3.75 million dollars to repair.
Today, the Des Moines City Council will consider a public-private fundraising effort that could repair the Southwest 5th and Southwest 1st street bridges for use as part of the Meredith trail system.
