Over half of American consumers are concerned about GMOs but most are not clear on what they are.
The new research comes from the NPD Group, which provides market analysis and tracking information as well as advisory services for multiple industries. The NPD Group researchers found that that when they asked respondents to describe GMOs in their own terms, commonly used terms were ‘genetically altered’, ‘not natural’ and ‘don’t know’.
One NPD Group Analyst told meatingplace.com that he expects the market to follow consumer concern, which will affect meat processors because livestock are fed genetically modified grains.
The USDA defines genetic modification as ‘Production of heritable improvements in plants or animals for specific uses, via either genetic engineering or other traditional methods’.
