Over the weekend a Bettendorf woman got to meet the man who saved her life.

Several years ago Lori McFate received a bone marrow donation from a complete stranger, a young German man named Michael Henkel.

McFate entered a contest sponsored by Angel Medflight, a worldwide air ambulance company. She submitted an essay and in online voting, McFate won.

Saturday the contest paid to fly Henkel into the Quad Cities so the pair could meet.

“For me this is one of the most important days of my life. I am meeting a man who saved my life. For Michael, he is a very humble, very noble man. He acts like you know he would do this at any moment for anyone because it’s the right thing to do,” says McFate.

Angel Medflight even gave Michael some gifts — including a lot of Iowa Hawkeye gear.
