Two of Coach Johnny Orr’s players spoke to Channel 13 about their experiences playing under him.
Terry Woods who played for the Cyclones 1986-1991 said Orr was so much more than just a basketball coach.
“He was not only a great coach, but a great man and tremendous friend to his players. He taught the game of life as well as the game of basketball. It`s a tremendous loss and I’m really shocked and moved to hear the news today,” says Woods.
Woods described the excitement of being recruited by Coach Orr when he was in high school and the four years playing under him.
Woods also believes Coach Orr is the Father of Hilton Magic and credits the energy that still continues at basketball games to him.
Another player, Paul Doerrfeld also played under Coach Orr from 1986-1991 and was team captain for two years.
Doerrfeld said Coach Orr expected his players to do well both on and off the court and was a very honest and loyal man.
He also agrees that cyclone basketball changed for the better once Coach Orr was hired.
“We had some great teams and I know people loved the Cyclones but I think a lot of it was because of Coach Orr and what he brought to it too,” says Doerrfeld.
