EARL MAY: Picking The Right Bird Feeder
Even though it’s cold and snowy outside, birds are still in your neighborhood. The Earl May in Waukee said it’s never too late to put out food or water for birds.
Different types of bird feeders attract different types of birds. Finch feeders are thin and need thistle or sunflower seeds; these are great for small, active birds. Thicker, tube feeders attract songbirds.
Cardinals and blue jays like to crawl and dig around for their food so they like wide, flat bird feeders. Bird houses are always popular and attract a colorful crowd, commonly woodpeckers.
Earl May experts said birds need water, this time of year especially. If you have a bird bath, consider a water heater for it so birds can get a safe drink.
