The Salvation Army is collecting their kettles from around the area on Saturday.

Volunteers said they still have time to reach their goal of $1.2-million.

“It usually doesn’t finalize till the end of January, close to it. But it looks like this year, if we’re lucky and again if everything goes well we should hopefully reach that goal. And it’s important because this is our main fundraiser of the year,” said Central Iowa Coordinator David Corliss.

This fundraiser provides roughly half of the organization’s operating costs.

They reached the one-million-dollar mark earlier this week. Organizers say they need to raise another $134,000 to reach their goal by the end of January.

In 2013, the Des Moines Salvation Army served more than 1,200 families and thousands of individuals with Christmas meals and toys for kids.

Donations can be made by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769) or through the Salvation Army website here.
