With candidates dropping into and out of upcoming campaigns and current politicians throwing in the towel, the political side of Iowa is starting to heat up. With the announcement from Tom Harkin and Tom Latham that this term would be their last, Iowa politicians are now actively campaigning for the chance to represent Iowa in Congress.
News Director of Radio Iowa O. Kay Henderson said Latham's announcement was the bigger surprise of the two because Harkin had previously hinted that he was no longer interested in fighting to win elections.
Editor of theiowarepublican.com Craig Robinson said Latham's decision to not run for reelection was a harder felt surprise because it would only give candidates a few months to raise the money they would need to actively campaign for his spot.
